ADRBC - Clearing the Fog: Plain Language Writing

Lunch & Learn with Frances Peck
Studies repeatedly show what professional communicators have known for decades: the most concise, precise, credible, and intelligent-sounding documents are the ones written in plain language.
Plain language is not about dumbing down content. On the contrary, plain language is a way of presenting complex material—legal, judicial, financial, scientific, technical—so that it’s easier for its intended audience to understand, use, remember, and comply with.
This presentation explores why plain language matters, what it looks like, and how to get it.

Agenda:

  • Recognize what plain language is, and what it isn’t.
  • Explore 3 techniques that will make your material easier to read.
  • Discover 7 tips that will make your writing clearer.
  • See, through before and after examples, how plain language can transform difficult passages.

Presenter:

Frances Peck, MA (English), Certified Professional Editor (Hon.), and partner with West Coast Editorial Associates, is an editor, writer, and instructor with over 25 years’ experience.

As a plain language specialist, she has worked with clients from the public, private, and nonprofit sectors on a wide range of material — from investigative documents to annual reports, from decisions to policies, from websites to manuals.
